The funny thing is I sold them all with out a bit of trouble. The good folks I met at the markets seemed very pleased to find somewhere local to buy chicken. I think everyone was even happier to know that there were no hormones, steroids, or antibiotics given to the birds I raised.
Healthy animals raised in a humane way and processed cleanly were my goals and almost everyone seemed ready for more. We ordered more chicks, went to work on more pins, and built a more permanent brooder house. I also knew that hand plucking was not going to work on 100 chickens or more so I built a feather plucker.
Lots of chicken also meant I was going to need more people who were looking for healthy chicken. For a while we were at the markets as often as we could be. I would talk to anyone that would listen to me about the chicken we were raising. I have the feeling the some of the people I talked to at the markets thought I was crazy too.
But maybe I wasn't crazy, because two weeks after we processed the 100 chickens we had raised they were gone. I could hardly contain myself. They were gone! Not only that but orders were coming from people I hadn't met at the markets. You were actually recommending us to you friends and neighbors. Our farm was picking up orders every week. Crazy or not this might actually work.
Off we went. I ordered more chicks built even more pins and had to hire a guy to help us process. And man do those chickens eat and drink. I found myself mixing up our special feed blend almost daily. At one point I was feeding almost 150 lbs of feed a day. They are bottomless pits it seems. And water is a whole other issue. During the heat of the summer 50 chickens would drink 10 gallons of water a day. Who knew.
We just finished with our last run of chickens for the year a couple of months ago. The run was 150 chickens at the outset, all of them were sold before they came to processing day. And all the thanks goes to YOU our customers.YOU made that possible for us. Thank YOU so much for believing in what we do. Thank YOU for telling your friends, family, and neighbors about our farm. Thank YOU for raving about our chicken like a bunch of crazy people.
